The JEE

Looking for a cosy, textured scarf to add to your wardrobe? Then The JEE is a very special knitting pattern that would be perfect for you! This is an incredibly important pattern to me. Not only is it stylish and a great knit, but it was originally designed for my mum (The JEE) who sadly passed away in August 2023. And you can read about how this knitting pattern came to be in my Substack post here .

This was also the first pattern I ever designed and the start of GoneAwool and Suzanne Ellsmore Designs. And whilst this published version of the pattern has been refined since that first scarf I gifted to Mum, the beautiful textures remain.

There are four very different, reversible stitch patterns in this design that complement each other wonderfully. You have the softer and bouncier Double Basket Weave and Rib and Welt patterns, and the almost 3D, more angular Moss Diamond Lozenge and Parallelogram stitches. These are surrounded by a simple, but robust moss stitch border. I would recommend using a plump DK yarn with great stitch definition to really help the patterns pop.

This easy, relaxing pattern is ideal for beginner and seasoned knitters alike. The individual stitch patterns are simply combinations of knit and purl stitch and are incredibly intuitive making it the perfect project for working on whilst you’re enjoying a coffee in your local cafe or taking some time for yourself in the evening or at the weekend.

The scarf itself is a good weight, large and versatile to wear. As it uses DK yarn, it keeps you snug and warm without being overly heavy. You can keep it casual with jeans by simply wrapping it round to show off more of the central section at the front or you can wear it as an elegant wrap with a brooch to keep you cosy when you’re going somewhere special.

And another thing that makes this pattern special is that going forward, in honour of Mum, I will be donating 50% of the pattern’s sales proceeds to Cancer Research UK between now and October 20th 2024. So whether you knit this fantastic scarf for yourself or for someone special, you will certainly have fun along the way whilst knowing that you are helping people have an even better chance of living with this disease and beating it in the future.

Happy Knitting!
